Conversational script performance in adults with non-fluent aphasia: Treatment intensity and aphasia severity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: A growing body of research in aphasia treatment has indicated that greater amount and intensity of treatment is associated with better outcomes in individuals with chronic aphasia. AphasiaScripts is a computerised conversational script training program that simultaneously collects accurate, reliable data about amount and intensity of treatment. Aims: The purpose of this study was first to investigate the relationship between amount of treatment and improvement on conversational script performance in persons with chronic non-fluent aphasia, and second to investigate the influence of severity of language impairment on this relationship. Methods & Procedures: We collected computer-generated treatment data from 17 participants with chronic non-fluent aphasia during the 9-week AphasiaScripts treatment protocol. Participants practised three individualised conversational scripts for 3 weeks each. We computed two measures of outcome performance: percent change in script content (script-related words) and percent change in rate (script-related words per minute). Outcomes & Results: Amount of treatment varied greatly, from 1.9 to 16.9 hours per week. Amount of treatment was significantly correlated with percent change in script content (r5.67, p,.01) and rate (r5.53, p,.05), after an outlier was removed from the analyses. Severity of aphasia, measured by the Western Aphasia Battery Aphasia Quotient (WAB AQ), was negatively correlated with amount of treatment. When the sample was divided into two severity groups based on WAB AQ scores, amount of treatment was significantly correlated with improvement in content in participants with more severe aphasia, and significantly correlated with improvement in rate in participants with less severe aphasia.

Correlation between Brain Lesion Site and Fluent/Non-Fluent Aphasia
Background and purpose: Aphasia is the most common communication disorder resulting from stroke. In this condition all modalities of language, including reading, writing, auditory perception, and oral speech may be affected. Aphasia is divided into two categories: fluent (Wernicke's aphasia, Transcortical sensory aphasia, conduction aphasia, and anomic aphasia) and non-fluent (Broca's aphasia,...
متن کاملScript Templates: A Practical Approach to Script Training in Aphasia.
PURPOSE Script training for aphasia involves repeated practice of relevant phrases and sentences that, when mastered, can potentially be used in other communicative situations. Although an increasingly popular approach, script development can be time-consuming. We provide a detailed summary of the evidence supporting this approach. We then describe a method in which scripts at various levels of...
متن کاملCritical Review: The effectiveness of script training intervention on the rate of speech and percentage content use in the speech of persons with chronic, non-fluent aphasia
This critical review examines the effectiveness of script training intervention with individuals with chronic, non-fluent aphasia with respect to improved rate of speech and percentage of script-related content words used. Study designs include: delayed treatment, multiple baseline, single subject study designs and a qualitative study. Overall, the results indicate that script training interven...
متن کاملUsing Informal Conversation in the Clinical Setting as a Measure of Communication Potential for Adults with Aphasia
The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical usefulness of informal conversation as a tool for determining ability to communicate potential regardless of modality (verbal or nonverbal). Four individuals with aphasia (two non-fluent and two fluent) and four non-impaired individuals participated in this study. Selected segments of conversational discourse were analyzed for communicat...
متن کاملAssessment of Aphasia in Iranian Patients Suffering From Frontotemporal Dementia
Objective Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is an uncommon type of dementia. The hallmark feature of FTD is the presentation with aphasia, or behavioral changes which are varies in different subtypes of the disease. We propose a quantitative aphasia test as an additive diagnostic tool for differentiation of FTD subtypes. Method: The study was performed on 20 patients, who were referred to dementia...
